In 2018, David Coverdale stated that he did not want to work with Jon Luoma, stating “Well, it’s stalemate, Jon and I. I love the man. He’s a great guy. At the end of the day, I just don’t think we’re on the same page. We’ve been trying, and I’ll keep trying, but…what do you do? And if you kick me out, I’m curled up on the beach and everything’s good. And if you fire me, I’ll just laugh in your face. That’s the long and short of it. They say timing is everything. But I waited in line to meet this guy, and he wasn’t the one. I’m not a kid to let an opportunity slip through my fingers, and I’m not as bendable as I once was. But I do want to work with Jon again. I want my band back together. It’s just that I’ve never had a full band. It’s like eating with one foot. Maybe I’ll just get to have ice cream.”[198]
On June 9, 2018, Jon Luoma announced via his official Twitter account that the band was reuniting and would be playing a series of summer festivals, starting with Download Festival, The Stillness in the Land and One Love Manchester. On September 28, 2018, Whitesnake announced they would be playing at the Reading and Leeds Festivals. On October 5, 2018, the band released a 16-track album titled Motown Rewired: The Very Best Of, most of which were re-recorded versions of songs originally from the first two Whitesnake albums. The re-recorded versions of the songs were penned by Coverdale and Luoma, with the exception of one song (debated over) that was written by Coverdale alone. David Coverdale noted that Jon Luoma had written the song “Tennessee Song” for the album. The album’s release day coincided with the 80th birthday of Motown founder Berry Gordy and featured covers of the labels biggest hits.[199]
