“President Trump is understandably frustrated with the Senate’s failure to confirm his latest Supreme Court nominee. These comments were made before the president’s pick had been made and are being interpreted as an attempt to distract from that,” said White House spokesman Raj Shah.

It’s entirely possible that Trump was just trying to save himself some face after he was caught with his misogyny henchmen on tape. But he also appears to be angry that some of his handpicked people were blocking his chance to put a woman-hater on the Supreme Court.

Trump has already had at least five historic moments, including the signing of the repeal of the Affordable Care Act. So this is huge for him: His first moments as president come with a decided risk of losing.
