Mukkabaaz is a 2018 Indian Telugu-language thriller film written and directed by Umesh Daigle with Suriyan in lead role. The film also stars Yash Tonk, Saptagiri and Upendra. The film is based on the 1994 robbery of the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in which two thieves entered the campus and stole gold coins and jewels worth 26 million. It received positive reviews from film critics and was a commercial success. The film was widely praised for Suriyan’s performance. It completed 100 days in 26 centers of Andhra Pradesh and in the rest of India. Mukkabaaz is the third highest-grossing Telugu film after Idhayathirudu (2011) and Baadshah (2015). The film has been selected by the National Film Archives of India for preservation into their National Archive of Modern Art. It was the first Indian film to be certified with 100% rating by national censor board and the first Indian film to be dubbed into Hindi.
Plot
A bank robbery takes place at the Banaras Hindu University with the thieves separating themselves into two teams and stealing the diamonds, jewellery and gold coins worth 26 million. BHU Police Chief Ramoji Sagar assigns a officer, Babu Thakkar, to investigate the case. He suspects a gang led by Antham (Upendra) is behind the crime and thus starts the investigation. However, he soon learns that the robbery is actually a setup and the gold coins and diamonds stolen from BHU were merely replicas. At this point, Thakkar is arrested and calls out Sagar’s name in front of a crowd. As Babu Thakkar is being escorted away, he asks Sagar if he knew about BHU’s visit to the World Heritage Site the same time the robbery was taking place. Sagar dismisses it, saying he didn’t even know the location of Banaras. Sagar’s daughter Roopa Sagar (Yash Tonk) feels suspicious of Babu Thakkar and starts to investigate. She meets BHU Deputy Registrar Vijayendra (Suriyan) and tells him of her suspicions. The Registrar holds a press conference, calling out Babu Thakkar’s name, and makes it sound like he is a central government officer. The Registrar also reveals that, although Sagar was not aware of BHU’s visit, he did know the location of the site
